Ruka, positioned 25 kilometres from the Russian border in Kuusamo municipality, developed its snowmobile trail network across 600 square kilometres of protected wilderness between 1985 and 2004. Most Ruka snowmobile safari tours operate in small groups, typically four to eight riders, with a lead guide and often a sweep guide trailing behind. Machines are modern four-stroke Lynx or Ski-Doo models, equipped with heated handlebars and automatic transmission. Riders receive insulated overalls, boots, helmets, and gloves before departure. The standard circuit covers 30 to 50 kilometres, depending on duration, with campfire stops where guides prepare coffee or tea over open flame. Some itineraries include sections of the Karhunkierros trail corridor or approach the Juhannuskallio cliff viewpoint at 450 metres elevation.
Commercial snowmobile operations in Ruka employ around 40 full-time guides during the winter season, most holding Finnish wilderness first-aid certification and snowmobile instructor credentials. The industry operates under strict environmental protocols: engines must meet Euro 5 emissions standards, and operators file route plans with park authorities to avoid sensitive reindeer grazing zones. Visitor numbers on guided safaris have grown from approximately 8,000 participants in 2010 to over 22,000 annually by 2025, making it one of the region's primary winter activities alongside cross-country skiing and husky sledding.
